Quick games to play on a 5-minute break
Good quick games for a 5-minute break have rounds under five minutes and stop cleanly. Daily puzzles like Wordle and Connections end on their own. Arcade games like Google’s Snake and Chrome’s dino game last a minute or two. Tabzooka’s Target Rush gives you 8 targets in 64 seconds on any website.

What makes a game good for a short break
A break game has to end before the break does. That rules out anything with a long tutorial, a loading screen, or a “one more run” loop with no natural stopping point. The games below pass three tests: a round fits in five minutes, there’s nothing to install or sign up for, and quitting mid-round costs you nothing.
There’s a good reason to play at all. A 2021 review in JMIR Mental Health looked at 28 studies of ordinary video games and stress, and found that “even single and short sessions of play had benefits in reducing stress and anxiety.” Our stress relief games guide covers that research in more detail.

One-minute games
Tabzooka Target Rush
Tabzooka is our Chrome extension. It turns the website you have open into a level, and Target Rush is its quickest mode. Elements on the page get red brackets, and you have to destroy all of them before the clock runs out. Level 1 is 8 targets in 64 seconds. Each level after that adds two targets, makes them tougher, and gives you less time per target, and every level you beat becomes a checkpoint you can start from next time.
It’s also a good fit for breaks because you don’t have to go anywhere. Press Alt+Shift+Z on the page you were reading, play one level, then close the menu to get the page back. Target Rush is in the free version, with two heroes. Add Tabzooka to Chrome to try it.
Google Snake
Search “play snake” on Google and a Snake game appears above the results. A normal run lasts a minute or two, and you can change the map, speed and number of apples.
A typing test
Monkeytype runs 15, 30 or 60 second tests and shows your words per minute at the end. It makes no noise, and beating your own score is weirdly satisfying.
Two-to-five-minute games
Daily puzzles
Wordle, Connections and the Mini crossword from New York Times Games each take a few minutes and finish on their own. Because there’s only one a day, nothing pulls you into a second round when the break is over.
Quick, Draw!
Six drawings, 20 seconds each, while Google’s neural network guesses what you’re drawing. You’re done in about two minutes, and its wrong guesses are the best part.
Chess puzzles and blitz
Lichess puzzles give you one position at a time, so you can stop after any of them. If you have a full five minutes, a 3+0 blitz game against a bot fits with time to spare.
What about the Chrome dino game?
Chrome’s offline dinosaur game is a classic one-minute game. Type chrome://dino in the address bar to play it any time. On a Chromebook managed by a school or company, though, it’s usually missing: Chrome turns it off on enrolled Chromebooks unless an admin switches on the AllowDinosaurEasterEgg setting. Our school games guide has more on what school laptops allow.
Questions people ask
What is a good game to play on a 5-minute break?
Pick something with rounds under five minutes, like Wordle, Connections, Google’s Snake (search “play snake”), Quick, Draw! or a Tabzooka Target Rush level, which is 8 targets in 64 seconds.
How long is a Tabzooka Target Rush level?
Level 1 gives you 8 targets and 64 seconds when you play alone. Each later level adds two targets and gives you less time for each one. More players in a room means more targets.
