Free stress relief games: smash something or slow down
Free stress relief games online come in two kinds. Smash games like Kick Ass, Destroy Any Website and Tabzooka let you blow a web page apart. Calm ones like Silk, Sandspiel and bubble wrap sites slow you down. A 2021 review of 28 studies found that even single, short play sessions reduced stress and anxiety.

Do games actually help with stress?
There’s decent evidence that short ones do. In 2021, researchers at the University of Milano-Bicocca reviewed 28 studies of ordinary commercial video games and stress, published in JMIR Mental Health. Their conclusion: “even single and short sessions of play had benefits in reducing stress and anxiety.” Casual games, with short rounds and simple rules, came out as a particularly useful genre.
An older study from East Carolina University measured heart rate variability while people played casual games such as Bejeweled 2, and found changes consistent with physical relaxation. It’s worth knowing that PopCap, which made the games, paid for that study.
One honest caveat from the same review: fast action games can raise your arousal rather than lower it. If you’re already wound up, a smash game helps some people and winds up others. Try both kinds below and notice which one leaves you calmer.
Smash games: break something on screen
These turn a web page into something you can destroy. Nothing real gets damaged, and it’s surprisingly satisfying to blow up the page that’s been bothering you.
- Kick Ass is the 2010 classic. Drag a button to your bookmarks bar, click it on any site, and fly a little Asteroids ship over the page, shooting text and images away.
- Destroy Any Website went viral in late September 2026. Paste any address and a pixel stickman wrecks it with rockets, a railgun and a flamethrower. Free, no install. Our guide to Destroy Any Website covers the controls and the best sites to wreck.
- Tabzooka is a Chrome extension that drops a jetpack hero onto the page you already have open. You can stand on the headlines, stack crates and knock them over, and fire a Special that hits harder than any normal weapon. Press Alt+Shift+Z on any site to start.
- Kick the Buddy has a free web version on Poki, if you’d rather take it out on a ragdoll than a website.
Calm games: slow everything down
- Silk turns your mouse movements into flowing, symmetrical generative art, with soft music behind it. There’s nothing to win.
- Sandspiel is a falling-sand toy that calls itself “a relaxing and creative place to play with elements like sand, water, plant, and fire.”
- Townscaper’s web demo lets you click a little island town into existence, one colourful block at a time. It needs a desktop browser.
- Infinite Craft starts you with water, fire, wind and earth, and you combine them into anything. It’s absorbing in the way a crossword is.
- A Soft Murmur isn’t a game, but mixing rain, waves and a fire into the background while you play anything else helps.
Bubble wrap, online
Popping bubble wrap is its own category. Bubble Wrap by cheeaun lets you pop with the mouse or keyboard and levels you up as you go. Infinipop is an endless sheet with no sign-up, and Snap Bubbles rebuilds the old Flash version with free-pop, race and daily modes.

A five-minute reset with Tabzooka
This works on whatever page is open, so there’s nothing to go looking for first.
- On the page that’s annoying you, press Alt+Shift+Z.
- Pick Brick, the free hero with the Sledgehammer, and start Free Play. There’s no clock and no enemies.
- Knock out the boxes at the bottom of a stack and watch everything on top come down with them.
- After about 14 destroyed elements your Special is full. Press E and Brick calls in a Wrecking Ball.
- Press Alt+Shift+Z again (or Esc, then the X) and the page is exactly as it was.
Brick and Zook are free, along with Free Play and Target Rush. If you’d rather not touch the page you were reading, the extension has five arenas built for wrecking, including a glass museum where every painting shatters. You can see it in the 18-second trailer, or add Tabzooka to Chrome.
Why smashing a web page feels good
A lot of daily stress happens on screens: a form that keeps rejecting your input, a cookie banner that won’t close, a page that loads one ad at a time. Wrecking that exact page gives you a small sense of control over it, and it’s over in a couple of minutes. The real site is untouched, so it’s a guilt-free way to take it out on something.
Calm games work the other way round. Silk and Sandspiel have no goal and no fail state, so there’s nothing to get right. If a smash game leaves you more keyed up, switch to one of those.
When a game isn’t enough
Games are good for a short break. If stress is constant, keeps you from sleeping or makes everyday things hard, talk to a doctor or someone you trust. That’s worth more than any game on this list.
